For brands coming to India

Launching in India? See the shelf before you ship.

In India’s cities, everyday shopping arrives in minutes from dark stores: small warehouses the apps run, each serving the streets around it. Shelf reads those shelves store by store, on 22 apps, so you can see your category in India before your first shipment lands.

Your company is outside India? Research accounts work from anywhere, and we arrange payment from abroad.

Each dot is a square with dark stores in it. In all, Shelf reads 11,234 stores in 984 cities, every day. For every store on a map, city by city, see quickcommercemap.com.

Why start with quick commerce

Your shopper is minutes from a dark store.

A shopper opens an app, picks from what the nearest dark store lists, and has it at the door in minutes. The typical delivery time an app promises at a store’s own address: 8 minutes on Blinkit and 6 minutes on Swiggy Instamart. For a brand, that store’s shelf is the shop window, and the app decides what is on it.

Stores, by app

Each store read on its own, every day.

Products listed at a typical store’s address
  • Blinkit 43,288
  • Swiggy Instamart 26,817
  • Zepto 25,307
  • BigBasket 20,970

At least, at the middle store of each app. Some are sent from larger warehouses nearby.

How shoppers find a product

So shoppers search.

With that many products behind one address, a shopper types what they want, and the first results get seen. Part of the results page is paid: on one app as much as 36% of the result slots. A launch in India is planned for search, and for each app on its own.

Result slots marked as paid, by app
  • Zepto 36%
  • JioMart 19%
  • Flipkart Minutes 16%
  • Blinkit 15%
  • Swiggy Instamart 11%
  • BigBasket 3.7%

A paid slot is what the app itself marks as sponsored.

Before your first shipment

See your category in India before you launch.

The apps’ shelves, search and paid slots, counted for every brand in your category: the shelf you would join, the prices you would sit between, the searches you would need to win.

How to start

Two ways in, from anywhere.

A research account, free to set up

For a team with no brand in India yet. It opens on the market by category: every brand on the shelf, the prices, the searches and the paid slots, on every app we read. You choose the brands to follow.

Set up a research account

A guided start

Tell us your category, the cities you are weighing and when you plan to launch. We open Shelf on your category with you, on a shared screen, then set up the plan that fits.

Talk to us

Paying from outside India

Pay from abroad, by bank transfer or Wise.

Choose a plan, then Outside India. You get an invoice at once, in your currency, with one set of bank details for it, or Wise; write the invoice number as the reference, press I have paid, and the plan opens once we have found the payment.

Choose a plan

The plans and their prices. We aim to reply within one working day.

Questions teams abroad ask

Can Shelf tell me how big India’s quick commerce market is?

No. No app publishes its sales, and Shelf never prints an estimate of them. What it shows is what is on the apps’ shelves, counted store by store: which products and brands are on the shelf, at what price, how they rank in search and who holds the paid slots.

Do we need a company in India to use Shelf?

No. A research account works from anywhere and needs no brand on the apps. Our checkout takes payment in India; a company abroad tells us, and we arrange the plan and an invoice it can pay from outside India.

Does Shelf list our products on the apps?

No. Shelf is independent of every app and does not list, import or sell anything, and it gives no advice on Indian law. It reads the apps independently, store by store. Getting onto an app is between your company, your partners in India and that app.

Which apps does it cover?

22 apps: the grocery apps (Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart Minutes, BigBasket, Amazon Now and JioMart) and 15 more, apps for fashion, beauty, pharmacy, pets, baby and food, the members’ grocery app FirstClub, and DMart Ready, which delivers next day or in slots. Every one is read store by store.

How recent is the data?

Every store on the apps we read is read again every day (JioMart and Amazon Now twice a day), and every read is kept as history. Pro is refreshed every day, and every hour in your target cities once set up. Free is refreshed every week.

Can we have the data as files, or through an API?

Every table exports to Excel or CSV on the Pro plan. There is no public API; a customer on a plan can ask for API access, and we arrange it case by case.
