Pack sizes and price points on India’s quick commerce apps

The pack sizes that fill India’s quick commerce shelves and their price per 100 g, category by category and app by app.

On India’s quick commerce shelves, most products come in small packs at set price points. Below, for 12 categories a brand from abroad often brings, are the price per unit on each app and the pack sizes most of its products come in.

How to read the charts

Each row is one app. The dot is the typical price per 100 g or 100 ml: half the category’s products on that app cost less. The bar is where most of the shelf is priced: the middle 80% of its products. The rupee marks under each chart are its scale, which widens at the low end so low and high prices both fit. Under each row: the commonest pack sizes, and how many products and brands the app carried.

What stands out

  • The spread inside one app is wider than the gap between apps. In every one of these categories, the shelf of each app spanned at least 3.3 times in price per unit from its tenth to its ninth tenth, while the apps’ middle prices were at most 3 times apart. So the first pricing question is where to sit on your category’s ladder; the app comes after.
  • Packs are small. The commonest pack sizes on the app with the most products: chocolates, 100 g; biscuits and cookies, 200 g; chips and crisps, 60 g; soft drinks, 250 ml; coffee, 100 g; tea, 250 g.
  • Discounts are part of the price. The middle discount below MRP ran from 0% to 26% across these categories and apps. The apps show the MRP and their own price side by side.
  • The apps sell their own labels too. In dry fruits, the app’s own labels held 27% of listings on BigBasket. In most of these categories they held little or none.

Are prices on India’s quick commerce apps the same in every city?

Not always. On some apps a product’s price differs from store to store; on others one price is shown everywhere. Each chart on this page is over that app’s stores.

Do the prices include tax?

Yes. Prices shown to shoppers in India include GST, and the MRP printed on every pack includes all taxes.

Why compare price per 100 g?

Because packs differ. Price per 100 g (or per 100 ml) puts a 52 g pack and a 150 g pack on one scale. Where an app prices most of a category by the piece, that app is named under the chart and not drawn on the same scale.
